Marlboro County School District held its 7th annual Spelling Bee on January 23, 2018, at Blenheim Elementary Middle School. Students in grades fifth through eighth were represented from each of the schools. Students competed in their grade level group, and the winner from each group then competed in the final round to be named Marlboro County School District Spelling Bee Winner for the 2017/2018 school year. In the end, Luke Chavis, fifth grade student representing McColl Elementary Middle School, was named the champion. Luke received a cash prize of $100.00 and the first-place trophy.  Nevaeh Arp, sixth grade student from McColl Elementary/Middle, was the second-place winner and received $75.00 in cash and a trophy. Kimberly Williams, eighth grade student from Blenheim Elementary/Middle School, was the third-place winner and received $25.00 and a trophy. Jay Williams, seventh grade student from Wallace Elementary/Middle School, claimed the fourth-place spot, receiving $15.00 and a trophy. Each contestant received a plaque and a t-shirt for their participation in this event. Thank you to the Marlboro County Spelling Bee Committee for making this event a huge success. A special thank you to the judges, Ms. Rebecca McArthur, Mr. Parnell Miles, Mrs. Debbie Polston and Mrs. Cathelyn Quick and The Town of Blenheim Town Council for their generous donation of the prize money. Marlboro County Teacher of the Year, Mr. Wayne Usher, served as Master of Ceremony while Mrs. Mary Anderson, media specialist, served as the moderator.
