Northeastern Technical College’s (NETC) Young Scholar program is becoming a real game changer for high school education in Marlboro County.  The partnership program between NETC and Marlboro County School District launched in August with 38 ninth and tenth graders from Marlboro County High School (MCHS) enrolling in college classes.

The program allows students from MCHS to take two free college classes each year, and funded by grants from the Northeastern Technical College Foundation, which is supported through donations from organizations and individuals throughout the region.

“As the first semester of this pilot program wraps up, we are excited to say that 97% of the students enrolled in the Young Scholars program have successfully completed their courses,” said NETC President, Dr. Kyle Wagner.  “Because of this success, we will expand the program with up to 40 more students this spring semester.”

The Young Scholar program was designed to give young students a “taste” of college, by offering a soft start to their college experience with classes offered on the high school campus, and taught by instructors they already know, credential by NETC.  All of the classes give students college credits that can be transferred to two and four-year colleges in South Carolina.

“The dual enrollment program is a win-win for all stake holders, especially our students,” said MCSD Superintendent, Dr. John Lane. “Not only does this program allow students to get a head start on their college education, it also helps students meet criteria for graduation and gives a competitive edge in the global market.”

NETC is looking to expand the Young Scholar program to other school districts in the region, helping to reach goals set in the college’s 2022 plan, which aims to have (by the year 2022) 2000 area students enrolled in dual enrollment programs, to have 90% of students take at least one college course during their high school years, and to see 220 of area 2022 high school graduates walk across high school stage completing their Associate Degree.
